Wiscasset Art Walk Season Opens on June 27
Galleries, Music, Hands-on Art-making Contribute to a Festive Night
Wiscasset Village might look like a construction project but behind the orange barrels and rippling caution tape are the open doors of beautiful galleries, new and familiar shops, delicious eating, and accomplished music during the season’s first Wiscasset Art Walk on Thursday, June 27, 5-8pm.
A new stop on Wiscasset Art Walk day is the Farmers’ Market on the commercial pier, starting at 3pm. Shop for local farm-grown groceries then head over to Treats for a delicious wine tasting from 4:30 to 7pm, always a propitious start to an Art Walk ramble.
Like a crescendo at the top of the hill, the historic Nickels-Sortwell House, owned and managed by Historic New England, will be open for free tours during WAW. At the other end of the Village, the Creamery Pier beckons with its exquisite riverfront views; lobster shacks and Sarah’s Café are open through the evening. And in-between, enjoy the high-quality art, both contemporary and historic, in the Village galleries; shope the one-of-a-kind specialty shops and exquisite antique venues.
This season, the gallery at 64 Main St. becomes the Weaving Project – a drop-in, hands-on art project meant for adults and children. With very little guidance, visitors will choose from an abundance of colorful materials to creat simple and unique weaving to take home or leave behind for a “community wall.” Local guest artists will also display their work in the gallery. In June, dream-inspired paintings by Kate Nordstrom and abstract photos by Mark Tripp add color and depth to the creative fun!
As visitors travel the sidewalks, volunteers from local community organizations will be on hand to describe their healing art projects, ancient artifacts, and share anecdotes. The Garden Club of Wiscasset returns with fresh flowers from members’ gardens, perfect to take home for the dining table.
Park your car in one of Wiscasset Village’s seven local parking lots and enjoy a summer evening of art & craft, music, Maine history, and sparkling river views – all in one place!
Wiscasset Art Walks are held on the last Thursday of the summer months: June 27, July 25, August 29, and September 26 from 5 to 8pm. Participant sites are marked with colorful streamers and touring maps are available throughout the Village. Lead Sponsors for Wiscasset Art Walk 2019 are Donna and Frank Barnako.
