Wiscasset Marketfest Gift Shop in Nickels-Sortwell Barn
Maine Artisans Participate in Holiday Sale, Dec. 6 – Dec. 8

The old barn on Federal St., just behind the Nickels-Sortwell House, will be
transformed during Wiscasset Holiday Marketfest into a seasonal gift shop full of Maine artisan creations and other specialty gift items, from December 6 through December 8.
Behind the scenes, Greg Uthoff, co-owner of BIRCH, and Betsy Kyle of White Pine Home, both in Wiscasset, are lending their extensive merchandizing know-how to creating an exceptional shopping experience in the barn. Both decorators were awed when they first walked into the empty barn a few weeks ago, and, with the help of Tim Peltzer, Preservation Manager for
Historic New England, have been inspired by the rustic barn to create an inviting holiday atmosphere with strung lights, fresh greenery, and chock full of one-of-a-kind gift items. A recent excursion into the barn’s loft resulted in a cache of homey antique objects which will become part of the barn’s décor.
Two dozen local and regional artisans will be displaying their work in the shop. But rather than a traditional craft show, the gift shop will be set up with a single check-out allowing shoppers to make multiple selections and check out with a single payment.

The variety of hand-crafted gift items is stunning. Historic New England, owner and manager of the property, will have a mini-book shop with its fascinating collection of books about New England subjects like lighthouses, historic gardens, the history of kitchens, and more. The gift shop will highlight local favorites like Asian Accents in Wiscasset, Mermaid Bindery in
Westport, and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle. Mindful Gardens will be displaying their beautifully decorated wreaths and other fresh greens while FLORA: Found Maine Flowers will be bringing bunches of brilliant winterberries freshly harvested for the shop. Gram J’s Nets on Vinalhaven is offering hand-netted shopping bags in gorgeous colors. Whimsy from Bristol features cuff bracelets made from local maps; the bracelets have been featured in
Down East Magazine and Shop. Wicks Forge, Snazzy Bags, Dennis Curtis Woodturning, Sheepscot Handwovens . . . the list of fine crafters is extensive. For a complete list of gift shop participants with links to their web sites, visit www.wiscassetholidaymarketfest.com and scroll down the SHOPS page. A portion of sale proceeds will go directly to support the NickelsSortwell House and barn.
