SUMMARY:Volunteer Docent Training - Lincoln County Historical Association
DESCRIPTION:The Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) warmly invites community members curious about volunteering in its historic house museums to attend its upcoming Docent College program\, taking place May 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Maine Tasting Center in Wiscasset. Both seasoned and first-time docents are encouraged to participate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLCHA has opportunities for new volunteers at all three of its historic properties: the Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta\, the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden\, and the Old Jail in Wiscasset.\n\n\nThis free program offers a welcoming introduction to what it means to serve as a volunteer tour guide at LCHA’s historic sites. Those simply interested in learning more are encouraged to attend. No prior experience is necessary. At the same time\, experienced docents will find fresh insights\, updates\, and engaging discussion tailored to enrich their work as well.\n\n\nThe program is designed not only to provide an overview of the upcoming season\, but also to facilitate sharing between new volunteers and longtime docents. Through interactive discussion\, attendees will explore best practices for leading engaging tours and learn directly from experienced guides.\n\n\nA professional tour guide will also offer practical tips and techniques to help docents build confidence and create memorable visitor experiences throughout the summer.\n\n\nParticipants may choose to serve at one or multiple sites. Following the main session\, each site will host a companion gathering\, giving participants the chance to dive into site-specific information while continuing to build community with fellow docents.\n\n\nVolunteer opportunities are flexible and based on individual availability. The Pownalborough Court House is open Thursday\, Saturday\, and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, while the Chapman-Hall House and Old Jail are open Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Docents may choose to serve as greeters or tour guides\, and new volunteers will have the opportunity to shadow experienced docents before leading tours on their own.\n\n\nDocent College is open to all interested people and there is no obligation to commit to volunteering for the full season.\n\n\nLight refreshments will be provided\, and the program promises an engaging and welcoming experience.\n\n\nAdvance registration is requested. To register\, please sign up here: https://forms.gle/uP62F19BJNqBRkx77 Or email Shannon at lchaprograms at gmail.com

SUMMARY:Divided Loyalties - LCHA & Old Bristol Historical Society Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Divided Loyalties: Loyalists and the American Revolution as a Civil War in Maine with speaker Michael Dekker\n\nTogether with Old Bristol Historical Society\, LCHA is pleased to present a lecture that examines the American Revolution through a unique lens with Michael Dekker as he presents Divided Loyalties: Loyalists and the American Revolution as a Civil War in Maine.\nThe American Revolution was not just a break from Imperial Great Britain – it was America’s first civil war. In Maine\, neighbors\, families\, and communities were divided by competing notions of patriotism. Divided Loyalties examines how intimidation\, coercion\, and legal sanctions were used to enforce ideological conformity\, as well as the strategies employed by individuals who resisted these pressures.\nThrough the experiences of ordinary people\, the program exposes the harsh realities of mob violence\, political disenfranchisement\, and personal recrimination during the Revolution in Maine. The presentation concludes by tracing how deep social and political fractures were mended after the war\, revealing the processes through which individuals and communities sought reconciliation\, stability\, and renewed cohesion in the aftermath of the American Revolution.\n\nHistorian Mike Dekker specializes in 17th and 18th-century Maine and New England. He is the author of the book The French and Indian Wars In Maine and is a contributing author to the book 1718-2018: Reflections on 300 Years of the Scots Irish in Maine. Mike offers talks and educational programming on a range of topics\, including the 17th-century cod fishing industry and its relation to the current state of the Gulf of Maine fisheries. He regularly provides living history programming pertaining to 17th-century Maine at the Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site.\n\nBristol Mills Congregational Church\n1261 Bristol Rd\nBristol\, ME 04539 United

SUMMARY:Has Our History Whitewashed the Revolutionary War? - Lincoln County Historical Association 2026 Winter Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:LCHA continues our 2026 Winter Lecture Series on February 12\, welcoming back a Winter Lecture Series favorite\, Bob Greene! Thanks to sponsor J. Edward Knight Insurance\, this online lecture is free and open to the public\, pre-registration is required to receive the link to participate! \nHas Our History Whitewashed the Revolutionary War? \n \nHas Our History Whitewashed the Revolutionary War? February 12 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm\nBob Greene will explore this question and show that if you look carefully\, you’ll realize that all of us took part in making us America. In this talk\, Bob highlights some of the Black folks connected to Maine who were there when it counted during the Revolutionary War. \nA native of Portland\, Bob Greene is the eighth generation of his family to be born in Cumberland County. His roots in Maine stretch back into the 1700s. After graduating from Portland High\, Bob went off to college and a career as a journalist\, covering among other things airplane crashes\, Mississippi River floods and the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He has met three presidents: Harry Truman\, Lyndon Baines Johnson and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. And\, as The Associated Press Tennis Writer\, Bob traveled the world covering the sport. After retiring he returned home to Maine where his genealogical research has led to his deep knowledge about Maine’s Black history. He currently teaches a Black History of Maine course at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at the University of Southern Maine. Bob also is a recipient of the Maine Historical Society’s Neal Allen Award\, which is presented each year for exceptional contributions to Maine History.

SUMMARY:Amos’s Ear: Black Mainers\, the American Revolution\, and the Fight for Freedom - Lincoln County Historical Association 2026 Winter Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Slavery and Abolition in 19th Century Maine \nWhen you think of slavery’s role in American history\, Maine is probably not the first state that comes to mind. Yet Maine was bitterly divided over slavery\, and her citizens played key roles in supporting and undermining the institution \nOld Bristol Historical Society in collaboration with Lincoln County Historical Association will host a Zoom presentation with local author Carol Gardner. She will discuss her forthcoming book The Divided North: Black and White Families in the Age of Slavery which traces two Maine families\, one Black and one White\, as they navigate the turbulent nineteenth century. Mark your calendar and register for this free presentation at www.lincolncountyhistory.org/event/carol-gardner \nThe Divided North chronicles the lives of two Maine families: the Rubys who were well-known anti-slavery activists and Underground Railroad operatives and the Gordons who were prominent ship masters—among them the only American executed for participating in the transatlantic slave trade. The experiences of these families reveal what it meant to live in a free state during the age of slavery. \nCarol Gardner earned a Ph. D. in English from The Johns Hopkins University and taught at Johns Hopkins\, Wake Forest and Florida State Universities. She has published fiction and nonfiction in a wide variety of books and periodicals\, and is the author of the 2019 narrative history\, The Involuntary American: A Scottish Prisoner’s Journey to the New World. She lives in Alna\, Maine. \n\nOther Lectures in this Series: \nFebruary 12 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – Has Our History Whitewashed the Revolutionary War? \nLincoln County Historical Association \n \n

SUMMARY:Laboring Lives and Hidden Stories in Colonial New England - Lincoln County Historical Association 2026 Winter Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) will present the second program in its series of free online talks on January 29 at 5:30 p.m.\, offering the public an in-depth look at households in Colonial New England. \nAs the nation marks its 250th anniversary\, LCHA invites participants to explore the daily lives inside colonial households as the country was beginning to take shape\, with a focus on laborers\, often a diverse group ranging from enslaved and indentured people to hired workers\, including Indigenous\, African\, and European women and men. The lecture\, titled Laboring Lives and Hidden Stories in Colonial New England\, will be presented by Dr. Caylin Carbonell\, Assistant Professor of History at Bowdoin College. \nDuring the presentation\, Dr. Carbonell will examine labor in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New England\, exploring how and under what conditions these individuals became part of colonial households. She will also discuss the challenges of uncovering the lives of laboring people whose stories are often hidden or incomplete in colonial records. \nThe lecture is free and open to the public\, though pre-registration is required to receive the online participation link. \nDr. Carbonell earned her Ph.D. in History from William & Mary in 2020 and her B.A. from Bates College in 2012. She is currently working on a book manuscript that closely examines daily life within New England’s colonial households\, revealing the cooperation and conflict among the people who lived and worked there. Her writing has appeared in Early American Studies\, Commonplace: The Journal of Early American Life\, and The Junto: A Group Blog on Early American History. \nThis lecture is sponsored by J. Edward Knight Insurance Company. \nFor more information or to register\, please visit the Lincoln County Historical Association website at www.lincolncountyhistory.org/event/laboring-lives/ \n\nOther Lectures in this Series: \nFebruary 5 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Amos’s Ear: Black Mainers\, the American Revolution\, and the Fight for Freedom \nFebruary 12 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – Has Our History Whitewashed the Revolutionary War? \nLincoln County Historical Association

This webinar will be remote via zoom. \nThe Catalyst Program is the primary competitive grant through NBRC\, featuring grant opportunities in the spring and fall. Pre-applications for the 2026 spring round are due on February 27\, 2026. Successful pre-applications will be invited to submit a full application\, which is due on April 17\, 2026. Eligible applicants (local governments\, secondary and career technical centers\, nonprofits\, federally recognized and Indian Tribes) and their partners are encouraged to attend. For-profit entities\, LLCs and other entities that are not a 501(c) are NOT eligible to apply for Catalyst Program funding. \nNBRC is a Federal-State partnership for economic and community development that certain counties in Maine\, New Hampshire\, Vermont\, and New York are eligible to participate in. This partnership was created to address economic transitions through strategic investments. Lincoln County entities became eligible to apply for NBRC funding in 2025\, following the congressional reauthorization of the program. In the first year of eligibility\, the towns of Boothbay Harbor and Waldoboro received grants for municipal water improvement projects. For this round of grants\, eligible entities in Damariscotta\, Dresden\, Jefferson\, Somerville\, and Whitefield are required to provide at least 20% match of the full grant amount\, while all other municipalities require at least a 50% match. \n“We are very thankful for the hard work and leadership from those who make Lincoln County’s inclusion in this program possible. This new opportunity will pump fuel into our region’s economic development engine and provide a much needed financial infusion into the heart of Maine’s midcoast”\, said Alex Zipparo\, LCRPC’s Economic and Community Development Planner. To learn more about NBRC\, including details about previously funded grant projects\, visit their website: https://www.nbrc.gov/ \nLincoln County communities that are interested in submitting a pre-application should reach out to Alex Zipparo at LCRPC to schedule a pre-application meeting and RSVP to the January 29th webinar. For any questions about the webinar and to RSVP\, please contact Alex Zipparo at azipparo@lcrpc.org. A link will only be provided to those who RSVP for the webinar. The deadline to RSVP is 5:00 PM\, Tuesday\, January 27\, 2026.
