SUMMARY:Laboring Lives and Hidden Stories in Colonial New England - Lincoln County Historical Association 2026 Winter Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) will present the second program in its series of free online talks on January 29 at 5:30 p.m.\, offering the public an in-depth look at households in Colonial New England. \nAs the nation marks its 250th anniversary\, LCHA invites participants to explore the daily lives inside colonial households as the country was beginning to take shape\, with a focus on laborers\, often a diverse group ranging from enslaved and indentured people to hired workers\, including Indigenous\, African\, and European women and men. The lecture\, titled Laboring Lives and Hidden Stories in Colonial New England\, will be presented by Dr. Caylin Carbonell\, Assistant Professor of History at Bowdoin College. \nDuring the presentation\, Dr. Carbonell will examine labor in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New England\, exploring how and under what conditions these individuals became part of colonial households. She will also discuss the challenges of uncovering the lives of laboring people whose stories are often hidden or incomplete in colonial records. \nThe lecture is free and open to the public\, though pre-registration is required to receive the online participation link. \nDr. Carbonell earned her Ph.D. in History from William & Mary in 2020 and her B.A. from Bates College in 2012. She is currently working on a book manuscript that closely examines daily life within New England’s colonial households\, revealing the cooperation and conflict among the people who lived and worked there. Her writing has appeared in Early American Studies\, Commonplace: The Journal of Early American Life\, and The Junto: A Group Blog on Early American History. \nThis lecture is sponsored by J. Edward Knight Insurance Company. \nFor more information or to register\, please visit the Lincoln County Historical Association website at www.lincolncountyhistory.org/event/laboring-lives/ \n\nOther Lectures in this Series: \nFebruary 5 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Amos’s Ear: Black Mainers\, the American Revolution\, and the Fight for Freedom \nFebruary 12 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – Has Our History Whitewashed the Revolutionary War? \nLincoln County Historical Association

SUMMARY:Grant Webinar: Northern Border Regional Commission
DESCRIPTION:Pre-Applications Open and Grant Webinar: Northern Border Regional Commission \nDeadline to RSVP is 5:00 PM\, Tuesday\, January 27\, 2026 \nAlex Zipparo from the Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission (LCRPC) and Sarah Demers from the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development will host a Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) Catalyst Program Grant webinar on Thursday\, January 29\, 2026 at 3:00pm – 4:00pm. This webinar will be remote via zoom. \nThe Catalyst Program is the primary competitive grant through NBRC\, featuring grant opportunities in the spring and fall. Pre-applications for the 2026 spring round are due on February 27\, 2026. Successful pre-applications will be invited to submit a full application\, which is due on April 17\, 2026. Eligible applicants (local governments\, secondary and career technical centers\, nonprofits\, federally recognized and Indian Tribes) and their partners are encouraged to attend. For-profit entities\, LLCs and other entities that are not a 501(c) are NOT eligible to apply for Catalyst Program funding. \nNBRC is a Federal-State partnership for economic and community development that certain counties in Maine\, New Hampshire\, Vermont\, and New York are eligible to participate in. This partnership was created to address economic transitions through strategic investments. Lincoln County entities became eligible to apply for NBRC funding in 2025\, following the congressional reauthorization of the program. In the first year of eligibility\, the towns of Boothbay Harbor and Waldoboro received grants for municipal water improvement projects. For this round of grants\, eligible entities in Damariscotta\, Dresden\, Jefferson\, Somerville\, and Whitefield are required to provide at least 20% match of the full grant amount\, while all other municipalities require at least a 50% match. \n“We are very thankful for the hard work and leadership from those who make Lincoln County’s inclusion in this program possible. This new opportunity will pump fuel into our region’s economic development engine and provide a much needed financial infusion into the heart of Maine’s midcoast”\, said Alex Zipparo\, LCRPC’s Economic and Community Development Planner. To learn more about NBRC\, including details about previously funded grant projects\, visit their website: https://www.nbrc.gov/ \nLincoln County communities that are interested in submitting a pre-application should reach out to Alex Zipparo at LCRPC to schedule a pre-application meeting and RSVP to the January 29th webinar. For any questions about the webinar and to RSVP\, please contact Alex Zipparo at azipparo@lcrpc.org. A link will only be provided to those who RSVP for the webinar. The deadline to RSVP is 5:00 PM\, Tuesday\, January 27\, 2026.

DESCRIPTION:Midcoast Conservancy will be hosting an outdoor gear sale – featuring used cross-country skis\, boots\, and poles\, snowshoes\, and mountain and fat tire bikes – on November 21 and 22\, at their Hidden Valley Nature Center\, 131 Egypt Road\, Jefferson. \nMost of the gear is in excellent or gently used condition; some may need repairs and will be priced accordingly. The organization is shifting its recreation model from transactional daily gear rentals to seasonal youth ski leases\, and holding onto some gear which will be utilized by organized group outings. This helps the organization save money on repairs and will get the gear into the hands of people who can use it regularly on trails throughout the midcoast\, including those at Hidden Valley. \nThe sale will be held Friday\, November 21\, 1-4:30pm\, and Saturday\, November 22\, 10am-3pm. All sales will support the organization’s conservation mission and are first come first serve with gear sold in as-is condition. \nThe popular youth ski lease program will continue and be held concurrently throughout the event\, and staff will be on hand to help size gear appropriately for kids 3-17. (Ski lease will be via credit card only) \nFor more information\, visit midcoastconservancy.org/events or call 207-389-5160.

SUMMARY:Art Talk on Photographer Kosti Ruohomaa at Maine Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Several of Kosti Ruohomaa’s haunting and desolate\, yet often beautiful and welcoming photographs of Maine in an earlier time are included in Nocturne\, the current exhibit at the Maine Art gallery. But we will have an opportunity to view a wide range of the photographer’s work during an Art Talk at the gallery on Sunday\, October 6 at 3 pm. \nKevin Johnson\, photo archivist for the Penobscot Marine Museum (PMM) in Searsport\, Maine will present “Kosti Ruohomaa: A LIFE Behind the Lens.” The slide show and talk focuses on the Rockland\, Maine photographer\, Kosti Ruohomaa\, a photography rock star during the era of photo magazines such as LIFE. \nThe Ruohomaa Collection of photographs has come home to Maine through a generous donation to PMM by Black Star of New York\, Ruohomaa’s photography agency\, and it consists of thousands of medium and large format negatives\, 35 mm negatives and slides\, as well as contact sheets and vintage prints. His photographs graced the cover of Life Magazine numerous times. Other major magazines such as Look\, National Geographic\, and Downeast used his photos regularly. \nWhile he photographed around the world\, Maine was Kosti’s favorite subject. Kosti was a storyteller with a camera. He captured the spirit and culture of Maine through its people and landscape as few other photographers have ever done. He died prematurely in 1961 at the age of 47.\nThe collection is now part of the archives of the Penobscot Marine Museum and is currently being digitized and cataloged. PMM has more than 500\,0000 thousand images from their various collections that can be viewed on the museum’s website in their online database. www.PenobscotMarineMuseum.org \nThe gallery thanks season sponsor Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty\, capital sponsor\, Islebrook Villages at Wiscasset\, and Nocturne exhibit sponsor J. Edward Knight Insurance. \nThe Maine Art Gallery\, located at 15 Warren Street in Wiscasset\, is dedicated to the advancement and preservation of the visual\, fine and applied arts through exhibitions\, lectures\, demonstrations and educational programs for children and adults since 1958. More information can be found at www.maineartgallerywiscasset.org and on Facebook at Maine Art Gallery Wiscasset. \n(photo caption)\n“Night Train at Wiscasset Station\,” cover photo for a book of Kosti Ruohomaa photos by Lew Dietz.
