SUMMARY:Art Talk on Photographer Kosti Ruohomaa at Maine Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Several of Kosti Ruohomaa’s haunting and desolate\, yet often beautiful and welcoming photographs of Maine in an earlier time are included in Nocturne\, the current exhibit at the Maine Art gallery. But we will have an opportunity to view a wide range of the photographer’s work during an Art Talk at the gallery on Sunday\, October 6 at 3 pm. \nKevin Johnson\, photo archivist for the Penobscot Marine Museum (PMM) in Searsport\, Maine will present “Kosti Ruohomaa: A LIFE Behind the Lens.” The slide show and talk focuses on the Rockland\, Maine photographer\, Kosti Ruohomaa\, a photography rock star during the era of photo magazines such as LIFE. \nThe Ruohomaa Collection of photographs has come home to Maine through a generous donation to PMM by Black Star of New York\, Ruohomaa’s photography agency\, and it consists of thousands of medium and large format negatives\, 35 mm negatives and slides\, as well as contact sheets and vintage prints. His photographs graced the cover of Life Magazine numerous times. Other major magazines such as Look\, National Geographic\, and Downeast used his photos regularly. \nWhile he photographed around the world\, Maine was Kosti’s favorite subject. Kosti was a storyteller with a camera. He captured the spirit and culture of Maine through its people and landscape as few other photographers have ever done. He died prematurely in 1961 at the age of 47.\nThe collection is now part of the archives of the Penobscot Marine Museum and is currently being digitized and cataloged. PMM has more than 500\,0000 thousand images from their various collections that can be viewed on the museum’s website in their online database. www.PenobscotMarineMuseum.org \nThe gallery thanks season sponsor Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty\, capital sponsor\, Islebrook Villages at Wiscasset\, and Nocturne exhibit sponsor J. Edward Knight Insurance. \nThe Maine Art Gallery\, located at 15 Warren Street in Wiscasset\, is dedicated to the advancement and preservation of the visual\, fine and applied arts through exhibitions\, lectures\, demonstrations and educational programs for children and adults since 1958. More information can be found at www.maineartgallerywiscasset.org and on Facebook at Maine Art Gallery Wiscasset. \n(photo caption)\n“Night Train at Wiscasset Station\,” cover photo for a book of Kosti Ruohomaa photos by Lew Dietz. Many more Ruohomaa photos can be seen at the MAG Art Talk on Sunday October 6 at 3 pm.

SUMMARY:First Congregational Church Wiscasset Summerfest
DESCRIPTION:Summerfest – 4th Saturday of July\nEvery year on the fourth Saturday in July\, the Wiscasset Common comes alive with the activities of Summerfest. \nThis year features the ever-popular dog parade as well as tables selling jewelry\, crafts\, baked goodies\, and treasures. As always\, the silent auction will have many wonderful items\, including this year a smokeless fire pit and an inflatable stand-up paddleboard. Music during the fair will be provided by Wiscasset’s Jeff Grosser. \n The First Congregational Church’s Summerfest began as an all-church affair in 1983\, following many years as an annual summer fair held by the Ladies’ Organ Society. Proceeds of the fair are donated to local outreach organizations at a special Sunday in October set aside for the presentations. \nPlease contact the church for more info and to rent a table: 207-882-7544. \nEach year we raise and distribute thousands of dollars tto support both local\, national and international organizations such as Feed Our Scholars\, Habitat for Humanity\, Healthy Kids\, Lincoln County Dental Clinic\, Mobius\, Inc.\, New Hope Midcoast\, St. Philip’s Food Pantry\, Tedford Housing\, and FCCW Special Needs Fund.

SUMMARY:“Generations: The Legacy of Mentors” at the Maine Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:“Generations: The Legacy of Mentors” at the Maine Art Gallery \nThe new show at Wiscasset’s Maine Art Gallery (MAG) continues to explore the heritage that flows from the Gallery’s founding artists forward to today’s generation — a theme that began with last year’s 65th anniversary exhibit\, Generations. The show runs May 2 – June 9\, with an opening reception on Saturday\, May 4\, 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Gallery hours are 11-4\, Thursday – Sunday. \nGenerations: The Legacy of Mentors contains two components; the first features Maine Art Gallery artists from the 1950’s and 60’s\, and\, as art essayist Ed Beem describes in a handsome show catalogue\, the many manifestations mentorship influence took on the next generation of artists shown here. The second component consists of a juried exhibit of Maine Art Gallery member artists along with statements that describe their mentors and the influences on their current work. \nPhilip Barter and his son Matt Barter represent the close bond of mentorship that can be found within a family. Both father and son are known for bold\, colorful Maine landscapes and quirky works in wood. Another family mentorship is found in that of painter David Little an abstract painter and his uncle William Kienbush who was an expressionist. \nOther mentor relationships include David Dewey\, who studied with Joseph Fiore in Philadelphia and followed him to Maine. Frances Kornbluth and Elena Jahn considered Reuben Tam a mentor and drew further lessons from other Monhegan artists like Murray Hantman\, Michael Loew and Morris Shulman who showed at MAG in the 60s and return in this exhibition. \nSarah Fisher\, a former painting conservator\, speaks of the influence of Lina Burley in helping her to be free to do her own art. Kevin Beers appreciated the generous spirit of his mentor\, Alex Minewski. Stow Wengenroth was a huge influence on Gregory Dunham as an artist and friend. John Laurent was such an influence on Tom Glover that their style is very similar. Jeff Epstein studied under Lois Dodd\, and Marguerite Robichaux came to Maine to work for Tom Cavanaugh\, who made her realize that she could have an artist’s life. \nThe generations artists will be further honored in an Artist Talk on Saturday\, May 18th\, the birthday of Gallery founder\, Mildred Burrage\, at 3:00 pm. Linda Burley and Lisa Jahn-Clough\, whose mothers’ work is part of the exhibition\, will speak about their special relationships with artists in a talk entitled “My Mother the Artist.” An artist-inspired birthday cake and sparkling wine will mark the occasion. \nThe Maine Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges season sponsor\, Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty and capital sponsor\, Islebrook Village at Wiscasset\, an Everbrook Senior Living Community. A donation ascribed to Friends of the Maine Art Gallery is the Exhibition Sponsor. \nA nonprofit organization\, the Maine Art Gallery is dedicated to the advancement and preservation of the visual\, fine and applied arts through exhibitions\, lectures\, demonstrations and educational programs for children and adults since 1958.
