“Whimsy: Flights of Fancy,” currently on exhibit at the Maine Art Gallery (MAG) in Wiscasset, has been delighting visitors since it opened to the public in early May. Artist Matthew Barter curated the show, selecting works by nearly 50 Maine artists. All of the participants responded in their own unique ways to the call for whimsy, using playful imagery in unexpected color combinations with lightheartedness and often a bit of mystery. Highlights of the show include line drawings by humorist Tim Sample, wood assemblages by Andre Benoit, and exuberant summery harbors filled with sailboats by Jillian Herrigal.
It’s not too late to get in on the fun. “Whimsy” continues until June 15. Gallery hours are Thursday – Sunday, 11-4.
The gallery will re-open on June 19 with “Fiore at 100: Maine Observed,” an exclusive retrospective of works by Joseph Fiore (1925-2008). This show, created in partnership with Maine Farmland Trust, runs June 19-August 21. A Juried Member exhibit, in which MAG member artists express their interpretations of the Maine vistas that influenced much of Joseph Fiore’s work, runs concurrently, June 19 – July 27.
